Introduction of the discussion

The Ukrainian crisis is still unresolved after three phases: the Euro-Maidan crisis (2013), the Russian Crimea transfer (February 2014), and the turmoil in Eastern Ukraine (March the same year).

The first crisis was an explosion of public dissatisfaction with the corrupt government, but it was triggered by the former President Yanukovych not having signed an agreement with the EU.

Although the second Crimea transfer was that Russia added Crimea which was internationally regarded as a territory of Ukraine to the territory of the Russian Federation, and of course it is a serious violation of international law. The Russians enthusiastically welcomed the Crimea transfer, despite the fact that the Crimea transfer increased Russia’s economic burden and became internationally isolated.

Russia’s economy is steadily deteriorating due to economic sanctions by the US and Europe and sluggish oil prices, but there is also a strange phenomenon that Putin’s support rate rises as the US and Europe strengthen sanctions against Russia.

Finding the problem

After the crisis in Ukraine, the relationship between the Western countries and Russia has become extremely cold. How should we analyze the motivation of Russia that has caused the Ukraine crisis today?

Argument

Russia’s biggest objective is to prevent former Soviet countries from joining the EU and NATO. To that end, it would be more convenient for Russia to leave unstable eastern Ukraine in the country than Russia would merge the unstable eastern Ukraine and stabilize the rest of the region.

Because NATO has a collective defense obligation, Ukraine, which has remained unstable, cannot join NATO at all.

Conclusion

Therefore, I would like to study “Russian logic” that will not hesitate while deepening isolation in the Ukraine crisis by studying with your professor Yoko Hirose who is familiar with the situation in the former Soviet Union countries.

Examining the conclusion

By studying with Professor Yoko Hirose, who is researching the situation in the former Soviet countries, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.

Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
