- Professor Hiroya Tanaka
Introduction of the discussion
Studio spaces called “Fablab”, which jointly owns small-size low-cost 3D printers and home-use machine tools, and practices new manufacturing movements, are being born one after another in about 150 locations around the world.
Anyone can make things by use of spreading digital machine tools and sharing design information via the Internet.
Fab labs are networked. For example, if you travel to the Netherlands and want a bicycle locally, you can go to the Fab lab in the Netherlands and make a bicycle locally. In other words, it can be said that objects are computerized and transported.
There will be an era when Fab Labs will become part of public facilities alongside libraries and public halls.
Finding the problem
How will people change with personal fabrication? Just as everyone can publish their own music and self-shooting videos and disseminate information with the spread of the Internet, if personal fabrication becomes widespread, anyone can actually make things. It can be easily imagined that this will change consumer sentiment.
However, the current state of personal fabrication is very similar to the early stage of the Internet, and the possibilities of personal fabrication are still poorly understood.
How will we spread machine tools such as 3D printers into society? How will we change the trend of the tendency not to study science and engineering that prevails in young generation? In any case, drastic measures based on national policies will be required.
Therefore, I would like to deepen my research on the true potential of personal fabrication and contribute to the expansion of Fab Labs and the spread of personal fabrication.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Hiroya Tanaka, who is doing research and development of next-generation modeling machine tools and design support environment as an advanced research and development base to advance personal fabrication in Japan, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
