Introduction of the discussion
The “real-world GUI” proposed by Professor Masui was designed so that intuitive operation in the real world can be used for the man-machine interface.
An interface has been devised and implemented such as, for example, “operates a smartphone and moves information to another computer like a goldfish scoop”. This is novel at first glance, but in fact, it can be realized by combining existing elemental technologies such as various sensors that read human movements and near field communication technology (NFC).
It can be said as Copernican revolution from the standpoint of the users who are familiar to the operation that is taken for granted on smartphones that unlock and scroll the screen to find and launch apps.
If we look around from this perspective, the user interface of almost all electronic devices is created for the convenience of the manufacturer, leaving the inconvenience that what we want to do cannot be done right away.
Finding the problem
Professor Masui points out that the current computer user interface is still far from ideal. Then, what should be the ideal user interface?
For example, the natural action when a person feels hot is the action of flicking his / her face with the palm of his / her finger spread like a fan. By using this action as an idiom for operating instructions to cooling equipment such as fans and air conditioners, the cooling equipment can be operated intuitively.
This is the basic idea of Professor Masui’s “Global GUI”.
As computers become more downsized, eventually the computer-shaped one will disappear from view and melt into the surroundings completely.
At that time, it is desired to develop a user interface that is widely accepted as a “natural” thing.
Therefore, I would like to deepen my research on “real world UI” and devise and implement a user interface that can be used immediately by children and the elderly without prior explanation.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Toshiyuki Masui, who is the foremost user interface researcher and has abundant empirical research results such as unique user interface implementation, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
