- Professor Atsushi Shinjo
Introduction of the discussion
Japan’s total value of food self-sufficiency on a production value basis is 66%.
In Japan, the production of low-calorie foods such as fruits and vegetables is mainstream, and the production of high-calorie products such as livestock products is low. Therefore, the total value of food self-sufficiency on a calorie basis is 40%, which is considerably lower than the value on a production value basis.
Consumers’ interest in food safety and security has increased due to food fraud, such as fraudulent production areas and production date, which have been discovered in recent years.
Here, what is attracting people’s attention is the private brand that has recently shown significant growth.
Finding the problem
So why are private brands growing so much? What is the reason behind this being welcomed by consumers?
Argument
Private brands are products that retailers and wholesalers sell under their own brands. Retailers and wholesalers can participate in product development from the planning stage and sell products exclusively, thus reducing costs and product prices.
In other words, for consumers who want to buy a safe and secure product as little as possible, it can be said that it is a long-awaited product.
However, there are still many consumers who are thinking about private brands, that is, cheap or bad.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to think about how to provide visible information, considering the standardization of plans for future private brand products to be safe, secure, and inexpensive.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Atsushi Shinjo, who is researching information policy and agricultural information science, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
