早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(大和田 英子 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

To begin with,  I would like to thank for the opportunity and in this letter I will do my best to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Cultures and Language Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

We may see translation app and new technologies made available to the world recently, but I consider the role of the human translator as a mediator between cultures which machine can’t do. Rather than merely supplanting one form of words for another, the translator has the capacity to enhance our understanding of social metaphors, development issues and different cultures by mediating ideas across cultural and national boundaries. Language studies should become more widely utilized and promoted through education, dealing with the systematic study of the theory, description and application of translation, interpreting, and localization.

Many schools offer courses in translation studies and it is a great way for linguists, language graduates, and translators to develop a deep understanding of the academic field, and the skills to practice as a translation professional as translation enables effective communication between people around the world. However, a list of schools that offer language studies combined with cultural studies and field study program can be limited.

Translations are never a product of a cultural void and there is a general agreement between translation scholars that in seeking to transport words from one language to another, the translator cannot merely search for equivalent words in the target language to render the meaning of the source. Therefore, as stated in many translation theories, translators not only have to be intermediaries between different language systems, but also have to be intercultural mediators. Interesting case would be in Africa, where each country has up to 50 dialects with sometimes completely different vocablary, the social as well as political need for translation is immense.

With many positive case studies around the world, where translators played critical roles in meetings, conferences and decision-making situations, I feel the strong need about gaining broad knowledge in international culture, language and translation studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help us find an area in which we can locate a job opportunity. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, it is extremely important for me to take part in the study abroad program that would allow me to transfer to a school progressive in the field. Very excited to learn and study among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
