早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(森川 友義 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

First of all I would like to thank for the opportunity, and in this letter please allow me to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Communications and Politics later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I can achieve with liberal studies curriculum and study abroad program.

Public choice theory is a branch of economics that developed from the study of taxation and public spending. It emerged in the fifties and received widespread public attention in 1986, when James Buchanan, one of its two leading architects was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics. It tries to explain how public decisions are made involving the interaction of the voting public, the politicians, the bureaucracy and political action committees.

Many public choice economists take no political or ideological position. Some build formal mathematical models of voting strategies and apply game theory to understand how political conflicts are resolved and collective decisions are made. Economists at the California Institute of Technology, for example, have pointed out that “agenda-setting” identifying the options that voters choose from, and even specifying the order of voting on the options, small details like that can influence political outcomes. This explains and opens our eyes, that we need to be conscious of these details and make decisions purely based on our economic and social benefits. However, these benefits candidates claim are always closely tied with what big players in the market promote in the long run.

Big corporations and industries spend fortune advocating for their economic interests. It’s easy to find examples of powerful industries lobbying in our country today: the sugar industry, the defense industry, pharmaceutical industry and the prison industry are just three that spring to mind immediately. For this very reason, many people today see not just American elections but those in other countries as little more than a competition between those with the deepest pockets.

Just like older generations are feeling threatened by the reluctance and corruption of the government officials, so are we. Especially because of the rapid changes in market and new technologies surrounding us, the lazier the government is, the bigger the inconvenience we suffer. Studying one thing won’t promise a bright future anymore, and because of that, understanding the history of politics and international studies is extremely important. Some people may be indifferent to this area, but I feel passionate about gaining broad knowledge in political laws and social studies from diverse perspectives. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
