- Professor Takashi Iba
Introduction to the discussion
The market for books, CDs, and DVDs is often said to be a “winner-take-all market” where not all products sell similarly, but some products sell explosively.
However, I believe that it is not a “winner-take-all market” to be precise.
In recent years, there have been many studies that “power law” can be seen in social life and natural phenomena.
Therefore, I am wondering that what is seen as in the “winner-take-all market” at first glance is actually a phenomenon dominated by “power law”.
Finding the problem
I am wondering if it is possible to invent a mechanism in order to intentionally and strategically create an emergent phenomenon, that is, “power law”, within an organization.
Argument
Prof. Takashi Iba conducted actual data analysis of product sales on the distribution of online store books, CDs and DVD sales and he clarified that the relationship between sales volume and ranking by month follows “power law”.
This “power law” can be thought of as “unexpected overall characteristics”.
Unexpected overall characteristics emerge due to the interaction of the individual elements that make up the whole. Recently there are many companies working on creating an environment and creating a mechanism to intentionally and strategically create these emergent phenomena within the organization.
I believe that research with “power law” as a research theme has wide applications in our social life.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to deepen my research on the “power law”, especially I would like to clarify how consumer behavior is affected by the “power low”.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Takashi Iba, who discovered the “power law” which is a hidden law in the sales market for books, etc., and by touching research in a wide range of fields, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
