- Associate Professor Hajime Narukawa
Introduction of the discussion
Associate Professor Narukawa focuses on solid geometry as a tool common to art and engineering, with the main theme of “design” to make ideas into shape, and is conducting research on structures such as lightweight structures called geodesic domes and lightweight structures called tensegrity structures.
In addition, research on world map projection (AuthaGraph) with very little distortion and the businesses related to AuthaGraph are also handled.
Finding the problem
Since it is not easy to express a three-dimensional geometric structure in two dimensions, it is common to design in a three-dimensional space using a 3D design tool which has high compatibility with a computer.
Here, there is room for utilizing AI as a trial and error tool in design work that has undergone remarkable evolution for design support.
Argument
Since an AI program has won the match against the strongest Go-player of the human race, there has been a lot of research on records of games of Go by the AI program among professional players. This can be said to be a good example of using AI to find an order to win under a certain rule.
On the other hand, AI can be used to search for “unexpectedness” that breaks the order that humans have created so far.
With the expectation that the “unexpectedness” of AI will have an impact on human creativity, AI is also used in the area of design. It is also meaningful for humans and AI to work together in search of “unexpectedness” that humans cannot imagine, and that will also be a trigger for creating a new design.
It is desired that by repeating trial and error while interacting with AI, our creativity will be stimulated and a new design will be born.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to create a structure that has the functional beauty embodied by a three-dimensional geometric design with the help of AI technology.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Associate Professor Hajime Narukawa, who is developing ideas centering on three-dimensional geometric verification with models and explores application to social needs, and has published numerous cutting-edge works as an architect, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
