- Associate Professor Yuko Shirai
Introduction of the discussion
The rich forests that occupy more than 30% of the world’s land have provided moderate temperatures, clean air, clean and nutritious water.
As the population grows and forests are developed as residential land and farmland, developed countries have developed forests in the Amazon and Southeast Asia one after another, causing abnormal weather, landslide disasters, etc., which have become environmental problems.
Meanwhile, Japan’s forest resources, a country that consumes large amounts of wood, continue to increase year by year. This can be attributed to the devastation of forests, the decline of forestry, and the dismantling of local industries that use domestic timber.
Finding the problem
Then, why do we rely on foreign imports for 80% of domestic timber consumption without using domestic timber?
Argument
It is said that the service life of a traditional Japanese wooden house is over a hundred years.
Wooden houses are designed for repair and expansion, and if you replace parts, the life will be further extended.
But now, such traditional wooden houses are almost impossible to build. This is because the current Building Standards Act does not allow traditional wooden houses. Every time the law is revised, it is more difficult to build traditional wooden houses.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to devise and disseminate methods for inheriting traditional houses and the craftsmanship and culture that accompany them, by making effective use of forests and trees, which are precious resources in Japan.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Associate Professor Yuko Shirai, who has a track record of research in the field of forest and water environmental systems and fields ranging from forests to wood and wood, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
