GIS (Geographic Information System) is a tool that integrates and visualizes data (spatial data) with information related to the location, using the geographical location as a clue, and visually displaying it on a computer enables the more advanced analysis.

GIS demonstrates strengths in information visualization, relationship understanding, integration and analysis.

In order to utilize GIS at a high level, it is essential to comprehensively and systematically promote the development of geospatial information based on national policies. Geospatial information refers to the location information of a specific point / area in space and information related to various events associated with it.

Finding the problem

Here, I would like to examine a new attempt to use the geographic analysis method by GIS for health care as part of countermeasures against soaring medical expenses.

Argument

Heart disease is the second most common cause of death after cancer in Japan and it shows strong uneven distribution of mortality.

For example, according to a survey of causes of death by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (as of 2015), when comparing standardized mortality rates by municipality with municipalities with a population of 10,000 or more, the difference in mortality rates within the same prefecture is the same for both men and women. Gifu prefecture is the highest, rising 8.04 times for men and 10.89 times for women.

Sophisticated analysis and countermeasures for eliminating the mortality gap between municipalities within the same prefecture as well as between prefectures are required.

Conclusion

Therefore, I would like to research on the risk factors of heart disease that shows strong uneven distribution among regions through empirical analysis using GIS.

Examining the conclusion

By studying with Professor Wanglin Yan, who is a leading expert in geographic analysis using GIS and extensive experience in regional characteristics analysis using GIS, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
