Metabolome is a general term for all metabolites in cells.
It is known that there are thousands of kinds of metabolites contained in one cell in mammals. An analytical method that can measure these enormous types of metabolites all at once has been developed by Prof. Soga for the first time in the world. That is the capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometer method (CE-MS method).
Prof. Soga noted that almost all of the metabolites present in the central metabolic pathway in the cell are ionic substances that are positively or negatively charged. CE-MS method was devised by combining electrophoresis (CE) and mass spectrometer (MS), which is a highly sensitive and selective detector.
Finding the problem
Metabolome measurement technology based on CE-MS has greatly contributed to biomarker search in the pharmaceutical field.
A biomarker is a substance that shows abnormalities in a living body or tissue, and blood glucose levels used for diabetes diagnosis are one example. Today pharmaceutical companies around the world are eager to find biomarkers.
Argument
Biomarkers are important because they provide an indicator for detecting signs of disease.
If a biomarker for a specific disease is discovered, the efficacy can be measured by comparing biomarker fluctuation values before and after medication. If the toxicity biomarker increases at the time of dosing, the dosed drug can be considered highly toxic.
Thus, biomarkers are useful for drug discovery research. Research continues to identify cancer biomarkers.

Therefore, I would like to find unknown biomarkers using metabolome measurement technology such as CE-MS.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Tomoyoshi Soga, who also serves as a professor at the Institute of Advanced Life Sciences with the world’s largest metabolomic analysis capability with more than 50 metabolome measuring devices including CE-MS, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
