Microorganisms play an important role in substance circulation and environmental conservation, but cause various infectious diseases and pose a threat to humans, animals and plants.
Therefore, research is ongoing to deepen understanding of microorganisms using bioinformatics that analyzes biological data using information science techniques.
There is also research to identify genes involved in substance metabolism from genome analysis of bacteria that play an important role in substance circulation, and identify genes involved in pathogenicity and drug resistance of bacteria from genome analysis of pathogenic bacteria.
Finding the problem
Plasmids that are extrachromosomal DNA are known to transmit by horizontal gene transfer between microorganisms, and the host microorganism acquires new functions by receiving plasmids from other microorganisms. Here, there are elements that can pose a threat to humans, animals and plants.
Argument
In addition to antibiotic resistance, plasmids have genes that express various functions such as degradation of recalcitrant substances and heavy metal resistance.
If the plasmid is to be transmitted by horizontal gene transfer between microorganisms and it is a broad host range plasmid, antibiotic resistance acquired by one microorganism may be transmitted to other microorganisms one after another.
Therefore, if the host range of the plasmid can be predicted, and the route of horizontal gene transfer can be estimated and blocked, the diffusion of antibiotic resistance can be limited to the minimum, and the efficacy of the antibiotic can be maintained.
