Dear Admission Office, 

First of all I would like to thank for the opportunity, and in this letter please allow me to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Communications and Cultural Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I can achieve upon joining the school. 

The first thing that comes into most people’s minds when they hear “Martial Art” is probably an image of Bruce Lee furiously defending themselves against ten attackers. Today the word “Martial Art” has been associated with academics, and it had some people confused at how such a “violent” activity could positively contribute to improving a child’s performance in education. Unfortunately, Hollywood focuses on the physical half of the Martial Arts and rarely presents the other half, which is self discipline that is the backbone of any Martial Art. In an example, the movie Karate Kid superbly illustrated this aspect of the Martial Arts.  Anyone who desires to become a true Martial Artist, whether he is practicing Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Wu shu, or Judo, must first develop self discipline. 

The word discipline can be broken down into two basic ingredients – Attention and Respect.  These are the two most important mental attitudes needed for learning and if we look back to our days in school, we can remember those teachers who we gave attention and respect, we learned the most. Whereas, from those teachers who we did not care for, we learned very little. Therefore, Martial Arts is there to teach you that foundation of education is self discipline. 

If you try to name different types of Martial Arts being taught and practiced around the world, you must familiarize yourself with popular martial arts styles that some are striking, grappling, throwing, weapons-based styles and more. However, there used to be some problems with its mandatory participation in Japanese education system. The lesson there was, self discipline must come voluntarily, otherwise there won’t be any attention or respect. Just like Jazz taught many people an attitude towards society, Martial Arts has been adopted to teach an uplifting  attitude which is worth studying.

As we live in a society that focuses too much on English proficiency and Hi-Tech, many may have become blinded to the very basic. Nowadays, studying one thing won’t promise a bright future, but being able to truly understand various values and establish a communication in this globalization era is a tangible gift. Thus, I feel passionate about gaining broad knowledge in Cultural Studies and Development of Martial Arts from diverse perspectives. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered.
