早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(スール ティモシー 教授参考)

Dear Representative at Admission Office,

First and foremost, I would like to thank for the opportunity given, and in this letter I will do my best to explain my motivation in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in Political History and International Business Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies, previously participated activities and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

Behind every flavor of politics, there is a theory. What is a political theory and political philosophy? Over time, political philosophy has arisen at times when somebody saw something was wrong and had to say something about it with logic and social truths to it. Any political thought is defined as “Systematic reflection on the nature and purposes of government, characteristically involving both an understanding of existing political institutions and a view about how they ought to be changed” according to Blackwell. But which part of ancient political theories are alive today and what can we learn from our past practices?

A number of political history books examine the political thought of ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, Iran, India, China, Greece, Rome, and early Christianity from prehistory to c.200 CE. The most common discourse was sacred monarchy, ranging from absolutism in Egypt to a conditional mandate in China. Justice, the rule of law, and meritocracy were generally regarded as essential. And ‘The people’ citizens back then were seen as recipients of royal beneficence. Though the exceptions were Greece and Rome; here participation based democracy and liberty were invented. However, theories of class evolved in India and China, and of the nation in Israel while Stoics and Cicero saw humanity as a single unit. Later Christianity revolutionized moral discourse. Philosophy, using logic, evidence, and dialectic, developed in both China and Greece where Confucius and Mozi argued for ‘humaneness’ and ethical consensus, ‘Legalists’ for coercion, realpolitik, and an authoritarian state. Plato and Aristocrat in Greece, followed by Polybius and Cicero in Rome, initiated ‘Western’ political philosophy and science. Overall, practical politics was developed by Aristotle and the Indian Kautilya while Chinese and Greek thinkers investigated the origin and purpose of the state. To understand the past practices, it is important to look at development across ancient civilizations covering political philosophy, religious ideology, public ethics, constitutional theory, and popular political culture.

From there, we can analyze the current state of political reality in different countries, I feel passionate about studying that of Japan, Germany, United States, China, South East Countries and also Islamic states. I aim to learn and gain my own perspectives in international culture, political history and social science studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help me work in today’s competitive global workplace. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Studying abroad in relevant school that excel in the field of studies would be an enriching experience. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.

Sincerely Yours,
