早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(桜井 啓子 教授参考)

Dear Representative at Admission Office,

First and foremost, I would like to thank for the opportunity given, and in this letter I will do my best to explain my motivation in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in Islam and Comparative Cultural Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies, previously participated activities and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

Islamic world today is torn with violence and some countries are notorious for what has come to be known as ‘jihadi culture’, but if you are an history geek, you must wonder what happened as Islam culture was always foreign friendly and forgiving. Some experts argue it is because of the Islamic Law and the View which doesn’t match the modern world, so the Islamic world is facing two challenges; outdated law and misconception from the rest of the world.

One particular issue seems to be the inaccurate use of terminology, for example the misuse of descriptions such as “fundamentalist”, “Islamist” or references that seem clear, but come with a lot of baggage. We have to change our outlook to other religions, often denouncing them as false and claiming superiority for ourselves. We should not only accept pluralism but actively promote it through dialogue and mutual understanding and harmonious co-existence.

Regarding issues with Islamix Law, Though Qur’an contains all provisions of declaration of human rights charter, Islamic countries present stark contrast and human rights record of Muslim countries is among the worst in the world today. It brings worldwide criticism and creates an impression that Islam has no respect for human rights. Unfortunately, it is only modern intellectuals armed with Qur’anic values and Qur’anic respect for human dignity can actively promote such culture. There is great need to improve situation of women’s rights in Islamic world and for that we also need women perspectives for understanding Qur’an, especially those verses which pertain to marriage, divorce and women’s rights. So far, Qur’an has been mainly interpreted by men though during the Prophet’s time and during subsequent period lasting for few years only, though there was glorious tradition of women ‘ulama, women narrators of ahadith and women commentators in the past. We recognize an urgent need to revive that tradition, which would drastically help modernize and put an end to injustice.

For generation that grew up with news all negative about the Islam world, it feels like it’s a taboo to touch related field of study. However, I respect the historical contribution and I feel the strong need about gaining my own perspectives in international culture, islam society and environmental studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help me work in competitive global workplace. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
