早稲田大学 文化構想学部 JCulP AO入試 英文志望理由書 提出例 (大藪 泰 教授参考)
ACADEMIC INTEREST
“I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” So said the physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who helped to invent the atomic bomb that killed many in HIroshima. Humans have certain traits and abilities that separate us from other animals which enable us to create a destructive tool like atomic bomb. What defines us? In recent years, many traits once believed to be uniquely human, from morality to culture, have been found in the animal kingdom too. Empathy, Art, Lies, Morals, Imagination and we can list many, and I am curious to find out what really defines us and how we develop those skills through exposure to culture and education. And more importantly, how our modern living affects our development process thus our society.
WHY I CHOOSE JCulP
After my research, I appreciate JCulP is an extremely unique program that combines the best of both Western and Japanese education, offered by a prestigious school. Often, misconception in Japan is that if you have a high score in English, you are smart. But I disagree because English is just a language tool and without the content to deliver, how good of a use could it be? So the program is truly encouraging, as it doesn’t only focus on language proficiency. In order for us to shine and find a purpose after graduation, we must do our best to obtain diverse skills but conventional Japanese education simply doesn’t fulfill it. For example, language skills that allow us to express better than computers and translation machines, international mindset, cultural flexibility, specialized expertise despite gender preconceptions, broad understanding of globalization, digital adoption, ability to question and invent, cultural roots and so on. Because of that, I deliberately choose to join a program that promotes students to receive education in English, obtain competitive communication skills in a dynamic international environment, and extensively study Japanese cultures from broad perspectives in comparison to other cultures. Here is my gratitude for the opportunity given, and this is how I came to the decision of applying for JCulP at Waseda University.
QUALIFIED CANDIDATE
What originally motivated me to look for an unconventional study program was rather a fear. It is because of the brutal truth, that many other Asian countries have outgrown Japan and it is truly humbling. Yet, many young people are indifferent to the reality, reluctant to travel abroad and take challenges, moreover don’t even take the pride in understanding their roots. So naturally, when we are put in a same bowl as the rest of the world, we are very inappreciative and incompetent. So how can we stay relevant? Especially because the international climate seems unstable, it is wise to look at the past, embrace history and learn from mistakes to know what the future has for us. Therefore, I find the school’s philosophy, student demography and curriculum very attractive. I also strongly believe that discussion and presentation based classes promote active thinking and would really help improve communication skills. Being able to understand original content in English without bias and taking control of what I process would have a huge impact on my lifetime intelligence. Because of this, I am only considering JCulP or attending a school overseas as my options for the moment.
To summarize, JCulP offers the kind of schooling that combines the advantages of Western teaching that cultivates non-passive thinking and intensive study of Japanese heritage. As we fear, cultural borders are blurred and we are turned into followers on social media, but when I grow up, I wish to be an individual with passion and speciality instead of just following and spending attention on others. Having understanding of how the world worked till now is the first step to develop digital wisdom and live a civilized cultural life. With a prospect that the world will continue to invent, studying one thing may not promise a bright future, however, in order for me to equip myself with what is needed to secure opportunities in the age of globalization, I am very thrilled to join other like-minded students at Waseda next year.
