Area of Study I Am Most Interested In:
When you say occult, it sounds like something extreme. But nearly 30% of Netflix shows won’t make sense if these beliefs weren’t so deeply rooted in the western cultures. Japan also practices similar beliefs in Shintoism and we are a great exporter of horror movies in the world as well. Occultism refers to occult theory or practice, which is a belief in or study of the action or influence of supernatural or supernormal powers. The Western tradition of occultism as popularly conceived, is of an ancient secret philosophy underlying all occult practices. It is said to have derived ultimately from Hellenistic magic and alchemy on the one hand and from Jewish mysticism on the other. The principal Hellenistic source is the Corpus Hermeticum concerned with astrology and spiritual regeneration. The Jewish element is supplied by the Kabbala, which had been familiar to scholars in Europe since the Middle Ages, and which was linked with the Hermetic texts during the Renaissance. These dark practices can be mistaken or associated with undeveloped world, for example dark magic practitioners in West Africa, but what if having common spiritual belief supplies the base of society and people’s conduct?

What Makes The Program So Unique:
I would like to express gratitude for the opportunity given, and I do my best to summarize how I came to the very decision of applying for JCulP at Waseda University. I understand this is an extremely unique program offered by a prestigious school inviting students to receive education in English, drastically improve communication skills in a dynamic international environment, and extensively study Japanese cultures in comparison to other cultures. In order for us to shine in an increasingly competitive world after graduation, we must acquire diverse skills. For example, language skills to express better than computers and translation machines, international mindset and cultural flexibility, specialized expertise in one thing with broad understanding of the economic system, character and cultural roots are the things I can add to the list. In fact, I am looking for a program that can facilitate my plan to acquire academic English skills and pursue courses in Comparative cultural studies, Japanese History, International Business and open up my career path.

Why Am I Fit For The Program?:
I would be more than grateful if you could continue to read and allow me to proceed. During the in-person interview, I would be delighted to expand more on my area of studies, personal background and what I wish to achieve with the curriculum. With regards to what motivated me to look for an unconventional study program, I took part in a cultural exchange program recently in the states, there my biggest findings were the following. (A) Length of mandatory education is different in different countries (B) Education programs and content are very unique to each country and some countries only study very brief history about Japan (C) Japan used to be the main subject of Asian study, however, China has become more innovative now and the world is copying China now (D) Whichever content we encounter on the internet, media news or textbook, majority of them has been translated and biased, meaning original interpretation may differ and our thoughts are controlled. Due to the above reasons, being able to understand original content in English without bias and taking control of what I process would have a huge impact on my academic and lifetime intelligence.

In addition, I feel ashamed that many young Japanese are reluctant to go outside Japan and take challenges, moreover don’t even take the pride in understanding their roots. Therefore, when we are put in a same bowl as the rest of the world, we are very inappreciative and incompetent. International climate seems unstable, and the world may be uncertain, but the best way to learn what the future has in store for us is to look at the past and learn from mistakes. As a next generation to represent this country, I wish to know my own heritage so that I can be forced to extend it to the world and make an impact both culturally and economically. Therefore, I find the school’s philosophy and curriculum design very attractive. I also strongly believe that discussion and presentation based classes promote active thinking and would really help with building academic skills, even real life communication skills. Because of this, I am only considering JCulP or attending a school overseas as my potential bachelor options.

To summarize, in my belief the best kind of schooling out there is, the kind that combines the advantages of Western teaching that cultivates non-passive thinking and intensive study of Japanese heritage. As we fear, cultural borders are blurred and we are turned into followers on social media, having understanding of how the world worked till now is the first step to develop digital wisdom and live a civilized life. With a prospect that the world will continue to invent, studying one thing may not promise a bright future, however, having previously mentioned skill sets sounds promising. In order for me to equip myself with what is needed to secure opportunities in the age of globalization and achieve my goal, I am very thrilled to join other like-minded students at Waseda next year. Thank you very much for taking the time to read and I am looking forward to your reply.

END.
