I am sending my motivation letter attached with a purpose to explain the reasons for applying for the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Historically, economists focused on institutional factors, but recent challenges in the international community made us realize in the age of globalization, the economy is more complicated that ethnographic methods, and sociology can unveil a lot of the unexplained phenomenons. As a method, ethnographic observation involves embedding oneself profoundly and over the long-term aspects in a target culture or society to systematically document the everyday lives, behaviors, business transactions, and interactions of people. China has become the 2nd biggest economy in the world. Thus Chinese global engagements are deepening across sectors and geographic regions. However, the country’s economy feels like a black box due to the power central authorities exercise. I believe that the aforementioned ethnographic approach can help us understand the history of anthropology and business studies in Japan, Korea, and China, and examine the intertwined relationship, including East Asian colonialism.

Globalization brought positive changes to our lives, but at the same time, it is casting challenges in many aspects of life – labor, security, culture, environment, and all. From climate change, demographic crisis to technological disruption, and economic inequality, the world faces myriad challenges that require multilateral solutions. Still, there is no single formula that solves them all as societies become interdependent and too complicated when it comes to policymaking. All we know is, in the new world order in place, the luxurious benefit, the world becomes marginalized, and people who couldn’t cope with the changes brought by the era of information and technology would be left behind. Therefore, it is essential to know the socioeconomic changes our society has undergone.

Luckily, we are still able to hide in our bubbles in a country economically established like Japan, hoping someone else would save the economy. Although I can choose to do the same, I wish to navigate through the waves, so I get to be on the right side of the shift, which starts with competitive entrance exams, education in English, exposure to diversity, study abroad and intensive research-based seminars – all to become an opinionated individual with digital wisdom. That is my ultimate objective behind applying for a school like FLA, that promotes liberal arts. I feel that FLA is the pioneer in its adoption in Japan, and it has become my first choice after meeting alumni at a recent open campus.

At the same time, I believe that academics can often be western-centric, and I wish to contribute to better recognition of Asian heritage experts and activists by participating and presenting in international student forums. For that reason, rather than joining a school in the West, I believe it is a better choice to do equivalent studies in Japan where I can develop a sense of cultural objectivity, study my heritage and participate in programs to represent Japan. I’m committed to taking classes about various cultures, paying attention to authors of each textbook, and cultural background behind the research. I urge all fellow students to do the same, to start the process ourselves, which is to open our eyes to art and cultures that we have yet to see.

Lastly, I can’t express enough in words, but I am very thrilled to join the school and make the most out of the school’s academic outreach, human capital, and exciting curriculum. Thank you very much for reading, and looking forward to hearing good news.

Sincerely Yours,
