I am sending my motivation letter as below with a purpose to explain reasons in applying for the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Japanese literature had phases and different schools. Meiji, Taisho, and Early Showa literature is considered modern literature due to the fact the Meiji era marked the re-opening of Japan to the West, and a period of rapid industrialization. Realism, Romanticism, Naturalism, Buddhism and Utopianism influences are seen across modern literature works and it is intriguing. In addition, Japanese literature can be difficult to read and understand, because in many ways the written Japanese reflects certain peculiarities of the spoken language. For example, statements or writing styles are often ambiguous, omitting unnecessary particles of speech, gender differences in expression, words from a specific region or social class and so on, But I think that makes it beautiful as it makes us think, and interpretation of artsy expressions are up to our imagination.

The digital era supplied us with the access to art around the world, however, to appreciate the new, we must familiarize ourselves with the old. Globalization brought positive changes to our lives, but at the same time, it is casting challenges in many aspects of life – labor, security, culture and environment. And most importantly we need to educate ourselves to guide through the ocean of information. The digital space is filled with false advertisements and critiques. All we know is, in the new world order in place, the rich benefit, the world becomes marginalised and people who couldn’t cope with the changes brought by the era of information and technology would be left behind. Instead of being a passive consumer, it is extremely crucial we develop digital wisdom, study history, learn from mistakes and have our own views.

I choose to do so by passing competitive entrance exams, education in English, exposure to diversity, study abroad and intensive research based seminars – all to become an opinionated individual with broad knowledge in art, literature, anthropology and economics. That is my ultimate objective behind applying for a school like FLA, that promotes liberal arts. I feel that FLA is the pioneer in its adoption in Japan, and it has become my first choice after meeting alumnis at a recent open campus.

At the same time, I believe that academics can often be western-centric, and I wish to contribute to better recognition of Asian heritage experts and activists by participating and presenting in international student forums. For that reason, rather than joining a school in the West, I believe it is a better choice to do equivalent study in Japan where I can develop a sense of cultural objectivity, study my own heritage and participate in programs to represent Japan. I’m committed to taking classes about various cultures, paying attention to authors of each text book and cultural background behind research. I urge all fellow students to do the same, to start the process ourselves which is to open our eyes to art and cultures that we have yet to see.

Lastly, I can’t quite describe in words, but I am very thrilled to join the school and make the most out of the school’s academic outreach, human capital and exciting curriculum. Thank you very much for reading and looking forward to hearing good news.

Kindest Regards,
