- Professor Yuji Ohgi
Introduction of the discussion
In recent sports competition games, the aspect of data science has become clearer, and dynamic analysis using scientific approaches is also progressing. The improvement in performance from the benefits is also significant.
The dynamic characteristics that were previously believed to be difficult to measure can be measured. Recent advancement in digital technology has led to smaller and higher performance measuring and communication equipment, making it possible to reduce the size and weight of sensors that can be attached to athletes, and to collect sensor data via short-range data communication.
Even in the coaching field where athletes are trained, evidence-based coaching based on scientific analysis is becoming the mainstream.
Algorithm development that derives performance improvement issues from sensor data has evolved year by year, and this research field called “sports information science” has become an area where human resources with engineering skills are highly expected to participate.
Finding the problem
I would like to examine a coaching technique to further stabilize triple accelerators and four-turn jumps by applying a sports engineering approach to jumping elements of figure skates.
Furthermore, I would like to study the feasibility of a 5-turn jump ahead of the 4-turn jump.
Argument
When analyzed from a physical perspective, figure skating jumps are nothing but non-rigid rotational motion with variable moments of inertia.
In order to measure physical parameters describing rotational motion in real time, in addition to the accelerometer and gyro sensor that can be mounted, image analysis using a vision sensor will also be required. The immediate purpose will be to build a system that allows the evaluation of technical merit of each physical parameter to be known on-site immediately after the jump.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to deepen my research on sports engineering coaching techniques to improve the success rate of 4-turn jump and triple accelerator in the figure skating.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Yuji Ohgi, who has many achievements about sports engineering, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
