Dear Admission Office, 

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my purpose in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in Second Language Acquisition and Cultural Studies later in my academic year. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an unconditional admission or an opportunity to the next in-person interview. I would be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I can achieve upon joining the school.

We started to see news about translation apps and experts saying there will be no need to learn foreign languages anymore. Is it true? Is communication really just about language proficiency that can be taken over by machines? I doubt so, communication is more than language skills and that includes cultural understanding, comprehensive expressions and logical thinking. Over the past three decades, a number of different theories of second language acquisition have been formed in an effort to provide explanations as to how language learning takes place, to identify the variables responsible for second language acquisition and to offer guidance to second language teachers and learners.

The predominant theory of second language acquisition was developed by the University of Southern California’s Steven Krashen, and he argued that language acquisition and development are learned behaviors. Behaviorists believe we learn by associating events, known as classical conditioning as well as through rewards and punishments, a process known as operant conditioning. Context-embedded communication provides several communicative supports to the listener or reader, such as objects, gestures, or vocal inflections, which help make the information comprehensible. And it definitely makes sense that communication consists of not just speech, but also gestures and other kinds of components. Facial expressions are said to be universal, but in addition, people from different cultures communicate in diverse ways. For example, Chinese don’t mind multiple people speaking at the same time, while Japanese focus on agreement on each component during negotiation, and French prefer to leave conclusions in grey than balck and white. Due to these differences, there are often communication barriers that cause uncomfortable situations machines can’t solve. To make communication effective, these cultural communication barriers must be eliminated as much as possible, and cross cultural understanding must be increased as it helps both sides to look at each other’s behaviours objectively.

Therefore, before realizing my dream of working for international institutions and developing a framework for intercultural communication, I wish to study a combination of language acquisition theories and comparative cultural studies. I believe establishing a guideline would greatly help as more and more companies exchange human capital. In order to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered.
