Dear Admission Office, 

To begin with, I would like to thank for the opportunity and in this letter I will do my best to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Culture and Post-war Expression Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

While reading Japanese literature and comparing it to our digital communication, it makes us wonder how did we come to express ourselves in this manner while English expression and literature hasn’t changed much. Now is a good time to reflect on a broader climate of aggression, expression, censorship and nationalist revisionism. With regards to literature and expression, it is crucial to understand the social changes happening in the background of it, and the fact Japan was late developing compared to the West. It is possible to divide post-war social changes into 2 phases, 1945-55 social reforms brought by the occupation forces and 1955 to present economic development has taken place with the explosion of people culture under new structure. 

The aggressive wars waged by the Japanese militarists in the 1930s inhibited literary production. Censorship became increasingly stringent, and writers were expected to promote the war effort. In 1941–45, as World War II was being fought in the Pacific, little worthwhile literature appeared. Tanizaki began serial publication of The Makioka Sisters in 1943, but publication was halted by official order, and the completed work appeared only after the war. However, the immense public demand for fiction in postwar Japan has been fed by the prolific output of its writers. Yasunari Kawabata , who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968, has been praised for the delicate aesthetic sensibility of his novels. Junichiro Tanizaki , Yukio Mishima , Kobo Abe , Fumiko Enchi , Shusaku Endo , Sawako Ariyoshi, and Kenzaburo Oe , who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1994, are just a few of the modern Japanese writers who have attracted international admiration.

Many may be indifferent to the history of Japanese expression and literature as we are so drawn by pop culture and digital communication, but I feel the strong need to truly appreciate the roots for the sake of preserving and developing it further. I plan to study comparative culture and expression studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help us find an area in which we can locate a job opportunity. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, it is extremely important for me to take part in the study abroad program that would allow me to transfer to a school progressive in the field.
