早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(ベーコン ポール 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my purpose in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Relations and Laws related studies later. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an opportunity to the next in-person interview.

Having been exposed to different types of curriculums around the world, it surprises me how history classes in many countries only offer a fraction of information. Nowadays, tragic news about mosque attacks and race targeted incidents travel the globe very quickly. My reaction is, those people may be somewhat innocent and are only a result of being educated in Western centric views due to the reason I mentioned earlier about common education system. International relations, so called “IR” sounds intriguing but historically only few took up this subject to graduate unless they are elites that were aspired to join the civil or foreign services. However, globalisation blurred the lines of borders thus encompassing politics, economics, philosophy and other subjects in the field of the humanities, it has become extremely important regardless of career path one chooses.

International relations as a subject, it is said to have begun in its modern form as an academic discipline in 1919 with the passing of the first World War first in the UK and US, then later in Europe and beyond with three major approaches: realism, liberalism, and Marxism. Recently, some commentators and academics have begun to question whether these origins have led to the entrenchment of a subject limited in scope and effectiveness by overtly Western-centric approaches. As a result, various alternative International Relations theories grounded in non-western perspectives have been developed leading to a proliferation of discourse, sometimes in critical opposition to more traditional approaches. For example, it used to be 3Cs that were often examined: Cooperation, Conflict and Competition. However, newer theories include different and advanced 4Cs: Cooperation, co-optation, competition, conflict. I do agree that from a non-western perspective, the reality is much more complex than just cooperation on top of established state as a country. The political landscape around us is changing and to help a country cope with those changes, individuals with a sound understanding of International Relations can be of tremendous value to any country.

I wish to examine international relations from viewpoints of Japan, rest of Asia and Latin America especially to deep dive into the reality of cross regional relations before I can work for international institutions after graduation. In order to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.

Sincerely Yours,
