早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(太田 宏 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

First of all I would like to thank for the opportunity, and in this letter I will do my best to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in Sociology and Comparative Cultural Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

The future of Japan as a sustainable society appears in doubt nowadays, due to the falling population, rising ratio of elderly citizens, declining consumption and burgeoning public deficits. How can we achieve global competitiveness in both economic growth and environmental sustainability? There are a number of researches and sustainability index out there, some focusing on the economic growth or just environmental innovation while some others feature overall picture of the country’s future.

Surprisingly, Japan emerged as the only Asian country that made it in the top 20 ranking in 2013 Global Sustainable Competitiveness Index, where the East Asian nation placed twelfth among 176 countries. All these nations exemplify high sustainable competitiveness, or, according to the report, “the ability of a country to meet the needs and basic requirements of current generations while sustaining or growing the national and individual wealth into the future without depleting the natural and social capital.”

To common knowledge, some countries tend to stay away from any international treaty on environmental strategies, especially the still developing countries argue that it’s unfair that they have to bear those environmental protection goals while developed countries could deploy anything to get to where they are economically regardless of its environmental impact. However, is having environmental protection goals and restriction a bad thing? With economies heavily dependent on natural resources for their operations and more stringent legislation coming into place, the protection of natural resources and the transition towards more sustainable production and consumption models has become a strategic imperative for corporate survival and success, creating innovation within the corporates and societies.

The subject sustainability is relatively a new concept and there is much room for upcoming generation to really understand where we are and how we can realize transition to more sustainable living from both corporate and personal perspectives. More so in the last 10 years,  studying one thing doesn’t promise a bright future for us in while globalization and digitization accelerate, thus I feel the strong need about gaining broad knowledge in international culture, socio-history and environmental studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help us find an area in which we can contribute to the world. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
