Associate Professor Yuko Toukairin
Introduction to the discussion
“Japan’s presence in the world is declining.”
This is often heard in news and newspapers.
In 1992, about 10 companies such as Toyota and Mitsubishi Bank were among the top 50 in the world market capitalization ranking. But now, there is only Toyota.
Now, young companies such as Amazon, Facebook, and Alibaba currently rank high in the market capitalization ranking.
Under these circumstances, problems with traditional Japanese management have been pointed out.
Japanese companies have been focusing on reading between the lines, that is, unity and teamwork. It is a traditional idea that unity and teamwork are essential for efficient management. On the other hand, in today’s rapidly changing society, and there is a growing trend that individuality should be emphasized as in the West, instead of unity and teamwork.
Finding the problem
However, I think that the cause of the slowdown in Japan’s economic growth should not be attributed to the Japanese management style.
Argument
I have the following hypothesis; by emphasizing unity and teamwork, everyone involved can act toward a single goal, there is no waste time in decision making and management, and the overall management becomes efficient.
I think the problem lies in the lack of skills necessary to maintain harmony, that is, the lack of life skills. Life skills are defined as “abilities necessary to deal with various problems and demands that arise in daily life in a constructive and effective manner”.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to conduct research on the current state of life skills in corporate organizations and verify my hypothesis that current people lack life skills. On top of that, I would like to identify issues in acquiring life skills and make recommendations for Japanese companies to regain peace.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Associate Professor Yuko Toukairin, who is conducting research in the field of acquiring life skills in sports, and by touching research in a wide range of fields, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
