- Professor Hajime Ishikawa
Introduction of the discussion
Landscape Architecture is a term invented in 1827 by Gilbert Laing Meason.
The work of landscape architects goes beyond “landscaping”, depending on the scale, site planning for gardens, parks, cityscapes, etc., as well as large-scale landscape design such as urban planning and environmental conservation planning.
From the perspective of landscape design, Prof. Ishikawa is doing unique practical research regarding the material cycle that incorporates the surrounding environment, such as clarifying the daily manufacturing techniques and spatial structures that support them that are found around the farms in the mountainous area of Kamiyama town, Tokushima Prefecture.
Finding the problem
Prof. Ishikawa named the analytical thinking method “Landscape Thinking” that “sees in multiple contexts at different scales” and “sees the relationship as a sign of a broader situation”.
Here, I would like to analyze once again the attractive scenery as a local resource in Kamiyama Town, Tokushima Prefecture, based on landscape thinking.
Argument
Kamiyama Town is in the eastern part of the Shikoku Mountains, and 86% of the total area is mountainous. The town area overlaps with the Koshi River basin flowing through the center of the town, and farmland and villages are scattered in the upper and middle basins.
A slanted farmland is developed on the sloping land off the city, creating a characteristic landscape along with traditional houses scattered around it. Terraced rice fields and terraced fields are horizontal flat surfaces created and shaped by embankment, cutting and masonry.
Conclusion
I would like to deepen the study of landscape studies with the aim of becoming a landscape architect who can work from planning to design by learning landscape analysis eyes practically.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Hajime Ishikawa, who is a well-known landscape architect so prominent that there are no people in the landscape-related business who do not know him, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
