- Associate Professor Atsushi Aoyama
Introduction of the discussion
The time has come that ordinary people can go on a space trip without special training. However, outer space is a completely different environment from the ground, and it is particularly necessary to deal with biological phenomena in a microgravity environment.
Among them, space motion sickness, which causes nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and lightheadedness, is known to develop within 1 hour after reaching the microgravity environment and then last for 3 to 4 days.
There are reports that 73% of even the first astronauts suffer from space sickness for the first 2-3 days of flight.
In other words, when you stay in a microgravity environment for a short period, space sickness countermeasures are the most important issue.
Finding the problem
Space sickness is not something that can only happen with a semicircular canal or an otolith.
Because, it is reported that the symptoms of space sickness are also induced while staying in outer space, when we see a colleague astronaut floating in an upside-down state, when we see the Earth from the skylight of a spacecraft, and when we move to an unfamiliar place in the spacecraft.
From this fact, it is clear that visual information is involved in space sickness.
Argument
I would like to make a hypothesis that “the difference between visual information from the eyes and body position / displacement / acceleration information from the semicircular canal and otolith is leading to the confusion in the brain (reinterpretation error), which causes space sickness”.
I would like to verify the hypothesis by a clinical approach.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to learn about non-invasive brain measurement technology, to study the mechanism of the onset of space sickness, and to be involved in research on the prevention method.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Associate Professor Atsushi Aoyama, who is a Japan’s leading researcher who uses brain magnetic field measurement (MEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for brain information measurement and mathematical analysis, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
