Dr. Satoru Nakanishi

Professor

Department of Economics, Economic History

Keio University

Dear Professor Nakanishi,

I am writing this letter to explain my motivation behind application for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in Economic History and related studies. As we are exposed to more information than ever, the need for us to truly understand and process them only get bigger. I have read a number of your published work which I was very intrigued by. I hope I am able to elaborate on area of studies that can be a research subject in your seminar, and I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give this a consideration.

Abstract
We live and thrive in the wolrd of free trade, however, for the last decade majority of wealth has been kept to a handful of people. An economist predicted this phenomenon when the wolrd was introuced to capitalism in the 70s, and he called this a investor capitalism as called as shareholder capitalism as a more modern term. In fact, a majority of the shares of publicly traded companies in the united states are now held by institutional investors, and shares are increasingly held by professional money managers in many other countries as well. An era of managerial capitalism is being awaken by this investor capitalism everywhere, and companies have strengthened their leadership and restructured their operations to deliver even greater shareholder value.

Discussion
As opposed to this market progress, a majority of millennials reject the economic system, while some people wish to engage with trading companies, wealth manageal institutions to maximizetheir gain, many others seem to want to stay away from it. In Japan, though investment inproperties and social projects are perceived as something positive, investment in stocks and holding on to it seems to carry a negative perception as if one is exploiting others. This may be true to some extent, as the rich gets richer, but one problem interpreting social movements like these is that there are many definitions and versions of capitalism. And people seem to be thinking of a specific form of capitalism that deems the sole purpose of companies is to increase stock prices and enrich investors. Known as shareholder capitalism, it’s been the guiding light of businesses around the world for more than a few decades.

Findings
As a response to this objection seen in younger generations, socially responsible companies are starting to make a shift in corporate behavior in recent years. It used to be just pleasing investor, but rather than just focusing on that, companies noticed that investing in social projects do affect consumers behaviour and their perception about the services and products companies provide. Example of that, especially big comanies in pharmaceutical and consumer field, they spend increasing amount of resources in social community projects and invironmental projects to spread awareness of related health issues, and conduct scientific studies to educate the mass. The leaders at some of the world’s largest companies said they are ditching shareholder-first capitalism and instead embracing a corporate purpose that seeks to serve all constituents like consumers and the planet.

Summary
I think our generation tends to find identity through expressing hatred towards something instantly on social media without understanding them. Instead of disliking, it is extremely important to understand past studies and theories based on evidence as we are exposed to a wealth  of information. New wave of capitalism is a very important topic with room for further review and I would love to take part in your seminar to conduct more research. Thank you very much for taking the time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely Yours,
