Keio University

Dear Professor Susato,

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my background of study and determination in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in Social Thought and Sciences. I have read a number of your published work which I was very intrigued by. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give this a consideration.

Abstract
Human beings are of good nature and were granted freedom to mostly live in solidity. When we started to form tribes with fair means, this was the last stage of the state of nature, and Rousseau regarded it as “the happiest epoch and the most durable.” The state of nature ended when a right of property in land was recognized. I understand Rousseau did not believe that we can return to the healthy freedom state. Nor did he imagine that we can reconstitute languages containing the optimal blend of intellectual sophistication and musicality. Where are we headed in the time of interdependent politics, industrialization, capitalism and digitalization?

Discussion
Cassirer was one of the first to make a compelling case for the internal consistency of Rousseau’s thought, in the context of the early literature on Rousseau. Jouvenel in 2006 explains Rousseau’s individualism and collectivism as two aspects of a consistent response to the problems of modern society. In his works, he defines tyranny as ”the exercise of a power beyond right, which no body can have a right to. This is making use of the power anyone has in his hands, not for the good of those under it, but for his own private separate advantage.” though no man has any natural authority over his fellow men. The Social Contract is thought to be the most important works of Rousseau’s. It outlines the basis for a legitimate political order within a framework of classical republicanism. Published in 1762, it became one of the most influential works of political philosophy in Western tradition.

Findings
Do we live up to those ideals and legitimate political order humans should reach if we were to continue pursuing the path of capitalism? By nature, ape derived humans aren’t supposed to have money or any complex means of power, nothing more than fair exchange of natural goods. However, we have come a long way and we are probably still learning how to live under this “unnatural state” which is causing corruption, poverty, inequality.

Summary
Today, we face a number of problems in modern society, and it is crucial we look back at the world philosophers were seeing and expected to verify and maintain our sanity. I believe this thesis has room for much needed further review, and I would love to take part in your seminar to conduct more research and deepen my understanding. Thank you very much for taking the time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kindest Regards,
