Dr. Mizuki Kawabata

Professor

Department of Economics, Economic Geography

Keio University

Dear Professor Kawabata,

I am writing this letter in order to share my motivation in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, with its focus on GIS. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Summary
GIS (Geographical Information System) and spatial analysis have developed dramatically enjoyed a long and productive relationship over the past decades. GIS has been seen as the key to implementing methods of spatial analysis, making them more accessible to a broader range of users, and hopefully more widely used in making effective decisions and in supporting scientific research. However, end users using those apps and benefiting from this technology have no idea how the data points are collected. Here I would like to understand the history of these new technologies and its application.

Discussion
How are the data points collected, is it accurate and what is the technical aspect of decision making to conduct a complete analysis?

Findings
Geographical analysis consists of sequential stages of assessing each data component. The selection of methods depends on the type of inference and on the characteristics of the available data such as nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio. Everyone has seen google sends people on the ground to snap those data, but in reality, if we were to use GIS for research and in agriculture, prevention of natural disaster, city planning and many other sectors, the collection of geographical data can be extremely labour-intensive. It requires the map-maker to walk large parts of the ground, soil mapping followed by chemical analysis. Also, the life of those dataset can be short depending on the environment.

Conclusion
In recent years, new set of resources like drones are used in the process of data collection. Also, new area of studies seem to contribute to prolonging the life span of those datasets. In order to truly understand the evolvement of this technology, it would be extremely exciting for me to take part in your seminar. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Thank you and Kindest Regards,
