Dear Professor Kaji,

I am writing this letter in order to express my motivation in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in International Economics. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Summary
As much as we want to relate ourselves with the US due to political intimacy, we have more similarity with European nations in terms of economic and cultural exchanges. There are voices that question the future of Europe Asia relations, but many also think we have no choice but to strengthen our ties due to political instability surrounding other regions such as Americas, Russia and China.

Question
On top of fears over rising populist and anti-globalisation forces that have clouded recent European elections, with the brexit, is it possible that the EU could look inward for the next few years to sort out and manage its capacity? Now that continued survival of EU is shaken, what can we learn from it?

Findings
According to a paper by the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for External Policies titled Trade and Economic Relations with Asia, trade between Asia and the EU is significant. Asian countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and India are key trading partners for the EU, andTrade between ASEM countries accounts for half of world merchandise trade. It is because, historically EU and Asia supplied each other with what we cannot produce locally and 60% companies cross established offices in both regions. In addition, the number of immigration between these regions is only increasing including researchers, students and jobtakers. 

Discussion
Although the idea behind EU and its currency Euro is divine, and unity as a region is essential, it is extremely difficult to imagine similar strategy will be adopted in Asia. Having to use an international currency means you lose control over its value, but the advantage is to be able to assert a place in the world just like Euro succeeded in doing so.

Conclusion
It is likely that political priority of all European countries will be sorting things out and reestablishing domestic peace for the time being, however, as seen with recent trade deals between EU and Asia we can expect a further growth in the exchanges. It is a responsibility for us in the academic field to study what happened previously and find patterns to help improve. I would be extremely honored to take part in your seminar to further advance the ongoing research. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to the start of school year.
