Dear Professor Onishi,

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my purpose in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in Asian Economics. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Abstract
Much has been said about the re-emergence of China as a country to its historical position of eminence in the world economy, yet little is understood about the kind of economic system China is evolving. What is going on behind the game of business in today’s China, and how are they likely to change over the next decades? Is there any role model in the development of Chinese economy?

Introduction
China does not seem to have a grand plan for developing itself. It is too massive in size to move forward as a whole or there is a plan and it just remains mysterious to the rest of the world for its exclusive nature as a culture? It’s very conscious that it’s running the society as a series of experiments, as new rules and regulations pop up and disappear confusing business owners and policy makers around the world.

Research
Compare unique history of Chinese capitalism under socialist governance to that of Japan, SouthKorea and so on.

Findings

Chinese capitalism was given to a group a privileged people due to the limitation of socialist government, which evolved into the dominance of large conglomerates. Similar form is seen in South Korea, where they are not effectively family-owned anymore, but family-controlled. Businesses contributing to GDP is part of a complex global trading system that supplies goods to companies all over the world. Compared to countries such as Japan, US and Germany with good amount of high value exports, the challenge for the next decade seems to be whether those businesses can progress their way up the global value chain or not.

Conclusion
Chinese capitalism still remains a mystery, however some lights have been shed over the years thanks to experts leading the study. I see it as a mission to unveil developing economies of such impact, in order for Japan to compete and also work in harmony. This thesis covers timely areas of study of much importance, and I would love to take part in a seminar to contribute to the ongoing research. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours,
