Dear Professor Kimura

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my purpose in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in International Trade and Integrity. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Abstract
In the age of accelerated digitalization and automation, one thing that is never going to go away is trade of goods. The focus has been largely on ASEAN countries where socio economic development has taken place rapidly in the last decade including Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan etc. Africa is the new frontier but how is Japan’s relationship with Latin American countries?

Research
Look into what has been happening with recent trade deals between the regions and understand Japan’s involvement.

Discussion
In late 2016, several LAC and Asian countries were on the verge of entering the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). A year later, the U.S. has abandoned the TPP and relinquished its traditional role as a driver of global economic integration in bilateral and multilateral negotiations. Therefore, it stimulated new initiatives to drive the deal and after US withdrawal in January 2017, the 11 remaining TPP partners forged ahead with negotiations toward a new iteration of the deal, with Japan playing a leading role. It only took less than 20 years for Asia to become Latin America’s second largest partner and what are the exact trade and investment links worth noting?

Findings
Traditionally, Asia imports commodities from Latin America such as oil, soybeans, copper and iron, as these raw materials are scarce in Asia and therefore Latin American exports complement Asian needs. Since the new initiative between LAC and Asia, new projects such as Asian Pacific Alliance and fair trade agreement within infrastructure, telecommunication, education and renewable energy have been active. Japan tends to come after China and India in terms of size, but we play a leading role.

Conclusion
Asia Latam regions have a bright future to look forward to on all sides of trades – culture, energy, commodities, food, tourism etc. I would love to take part in your seminar to further understand and shed light to underrated areas of study. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours,
