Dr. Ayumi Onuma

Professor

Department of Economics, Environmental Economics

Keio University

Dear Professor Onuma,

I am writing this letter with an intention to explain my purpose in applying for Department of Economics at Keio University, specializing in Environmental Economics. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read.

Abstract
It is a valid argument when emerging countries refuse to take part in international treaty of Co2 emission reduction at  conferences, because already developed countries evolved at a cost of ignoring those matters causing chemical pollution etc. But, what is the point of even building a country if you were to ignore the wellness of people and sustainability of its economy as a whole?

Question
What is the latest situation on international involvement of natural gas reduction and sustainable energy production? Is it true, that between political parties with contradictive policies are causing inconsistent execution of promised measures such as nuclear plant and conservation of ecosystem?

Research
Investigate reality surrounding green economy in Asia and Japan’s involvement as opposed to China and western countries.

Findings
The United Nations EnvironmentProgramme (UNEP) defines a “green economy” as one “that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities”. It is based on the claim that “a green economy grows faster than a brown economy over time, as brown economy drains resources while green economy maintains and restores natural capital. Emerging countries in South Asia especially are active advocator of this because of rising oil prices and recent economic crisis. It is assumed that in the absence of international cooperation on technology transfer, developing countries may have to bear macroeconomic costs to realize transition to a green economy. While Japan and Germany leading the bioeconomic tactics, China is pushing nuclear plant as an immediate solution which may damage the water  and biological assets.

Conclusion
It is understandable that developing countries fall into immediate solution to meet short term economic growth goals, however, regions that chose to do so are in high risk or damaging natural resources and wellness of people as many developed countries experienced in the 90s. I see it as a mission to conduct research in areas of much importance, and I would love to take part in your seminar to contribute to the ongoing research. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to the start of school  year.

Best Regards,
